Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Trenton Owner’s Guide

Gelco chimney cap installation in Trenton typically runs $340-$780 depending on flue size, cap style, and whether the existing crown needs repair before mounting. We stock Gelco’s most common stainless and galvanized models on our trucks, and most replacements in Trenton’s older housing stock, from the rowhouses near Broad Street Station to the colonials in Chambersburg, can be completed in a single visit. If you’re seeing rust streaks, water in the firebox, or the cap has pulled loose after a Mercer County windstorm, the mounting flange or mesh has likely failed.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco caps break into two main lines: the stainless-steel series (SC, SSC, and LSC models) and the galvanized line (GC and GSC models). The stainless units carry a lifetime warranty against corrosion, which matters in Trenton because our freeze-thaw cycles and road salt spray from Routes 1 and 29 chew through lesser metal in five to seven years. Galvanized caps cost less upfront but need replacement sooner, especially on homes within a mile of the Delaware where the air carries more moisture.

To identify your cap, check the stamped model number on the mounting flange, visible from the roofline with binoculars. If the tag’s rusted off, measure the flue opening outside-to-outside: Gelco’s standard sizes run 8×8, 8×13, 13×13, and 13×17 inches for single-flue caps, with multi-flue models starting at 17×21. The critical gotcha is the mounting method: Gelco’s “slip-in” models seat inside the flue tile, while their outside-mount versions clamp to the tile exterior. Mix these up and the cap either falls in or blows off. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Gelco, but we source their caps through the same professional supply houses and also stock quality aftermarket equivalents from Copperfield and Famco when the OEM lead time stretches past burning season.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Rust streaks running down the chimney face. On galvanized Gelco caps, the factory coating eventually cracks at the seam welds. Once moisture reaches bare steel, the cap sheds orange streaks that stain masonry. In Trenton’s limestone-heavy water, those streaks etch brick if left alone.
  • Water in the firebox or rust on the damper. A Gelco cap with separated mesh sides or a cracked lid lets rain straight down the flue. We see this most often after winter storms when ice expansion pops the lid seam on older galvanized units.
  • The cap tilts, shifts, or sits crooked. Gelco’s outside-mount bands corrode from the inside out where homeowners can’t see. The cap looks fine from the yard but lifts in a strong wind. Last March, we found three in Chambersburg that had rotated 30 degrees after one nor’easter.
  • Birds or squirrels in the flue. Gelco’s ¾-inch mesh meets code for most applications, but if the mesh has separated from the frame or rusted through at the weld points, animals push through. A cap with compromised mesh is a cap doing no job at all.
  • Drafts that worked fine last season now smoke into the room. A Gelco cap with collapsed internal baffles, or one that’s shifted to block the flue opening, chokes the draft. The fireplace was fine; the cap changed position.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a standard Gelco chimney cap installation in Trenton, expect $340-$520 for a single-flue stainless cap with standard outside mounting on sound flue tile. Multi-flue caps or caps requiring custom spark-arrestor mesh run $580-$780. If the flue tile itself is cracked or the crown beneath the cap is spalling, crown repair adds $180-$340 before the cap can mount properly.

Every installation includes removal and disposal of the old cap, inspection of the flue tile and crown condition with photos you can see, proper sizing and mounting of the new Gelco or equivalent cap, and a plain-English verdict on anything else we found. Our 90-Day Done Right Promise covers the work in writing, no arguing. The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice.

DIY or Call Us?

A homeowner can safely check whether the cap is loose with binoculars from the ground, and can confirm water in the firebox with a flashlight. Do not climb the roof to tighten or remove a Gelco cap. The mounting bands on older units are often rust-weakened and can release unexpectedly; a cap sliding down a slate or asphalt shingle roof is a hazard you cannot control from a ladder. More importantly, most Trenton chimneys built before 1980 have brittle flue tile that cracks under the torque of a wrench.

We carry Gelco-compatible caps on our trucks, background-checked and uniformed, and most swaps finish in under two hours. Call (856) 519-0832 for a free estimate and we’ll be there when we say.
